Why is it that when you need to get stuff done you need to go to a place where there potentially could be distractions all around? I don't fall asleep, look in the fridge or even go on facebook and check out the latest wall post from people who like me are on there to much. I love the feeling of simply getting out of the house and thinking. even though this post isn't important or full of meaning full thoughts, they are thoughts none the less. It is good to simply sit down and reflect on how you are spending your days, you can come to some great conclusions this way. For instence i came to the conclusion today that i was spending to much time doing things that simply waste my time. An example of this is farmville, a facebook game devoted to wasting your time.. i wonder how much more we could accomplish without different distractions like this to fill up our day? Then i think i wonder how many times have i neglected to spend time with God due to these destractions. I looked up the definition of disctraction and it was more acurate then i would have thought, "Extreme mental or emotional disturbance; obsession".. Obsession.. hmmm interesting; Or "an interruption; an obstacle to concentration". I like this one. It is a common thing that probably 99% of the world face. I guess my question would be, "What are the things that distract us from spending our time with God?" Everyone can say that there is an obstacle to our concentraton of God our father at times, but i know that personally instead of knowing the obstacle and figuring a way to get around it, dig down and remove the obstacle all together. I guess sitting and thinking does produce some internal thoughts after all. I hope this provokes some thoughts regarding obcticles of distraction that hinder us from spending time with Christ.

...and we are LIVE...

Why is it that when we sit and think it is hard to actually do any thinking at all? As i sip away my coffee and listen to sermons on-line i suddenly feel like i am in a zone where everyone around me has suddenly been beamed up into a haze of nothingness. But they are still here. I realize this when a friend wackes the window behind me and makes my hair instantly stand on end. As my heart rate comes back down to a normal pace and i am back into my zone I begin to think... it is blank again. Now i am just a man in a coffee house thinking about nothing. I must admit this is one of my favorite things to do, but this time i want to think but it is as blank as a canvas without paint. As soon as i realize this, the funniest thing happens, a light bulb flashes and instantly a thought. It is about life. I must remind you i am sitting in a coffee shop. People sometimes look funny here. We have this craving for coffee and this addiction to the caffeine that makes us shake, but what is the point? I love my coffee, in fact i am one of those people who drink it regularly. In fact, i am finishing my third cup as i am typing. I think to myself about our desperation over things like coffee and wonder why. It is only a cup of coffee and at the end of the day the only thing it does is keep us up when we want to sleep. When it comes to issues of faith, why is it so hard to have this desperation and addiction to the extent we do for coffee, our favorite hockey team or that last little bit of sleep we crave after we press the snooze button? Addiction is good when it is on the important issue of faith and Christ, why can't we be addicted to Christ and the word of God the same way? As this new year begins i have been studying what it means to truly live for Christ; not just in the mornings or at night, but throughout the day, live on display. What would it look like if we were fully Living a Christ like life everyday on display the way Christ has called us to live? hmmmmm..... interesting. Just like live television has no interruptions, no pause button or delete; what you see is what you get. Geunuine Christian living... LIVE:LIVE

Jabin Postal

calling what ever number is dialed

When we ask someone why they are doing something the common response sounds like a monotone grunt trying to make a genuine reason for what they are doing. where that be serving up another cup of disgusting instant coffee, punching in numbers on a ghetto old computer or simply driving around because it gets you out of the house and the possibility of hearing your favorite Brittany song on the radio. I think Derrick Zoolander put it best saying, "theirs got to be more to life than being really, really, ridiculously good looking." But what is it? There are lots of people now a days that have lots sight of what they are passionate for and called to do because of our daily rutine of starbucks and punchin the clock trying to bring home the biggest and tastyest 3 pack of bacon. Why is it that life simply just goes by? I believe that we need to tune into what we are called to do and at least try to do it. we can never know where something will lead to if we don't take the step forward. I believe that when we are called to something, Christ will be walking with us every step of the way, if and when we fall or even fail, we can get back up and try it again. a calling isn't a job it's a passion which never quites... what are we called to do?

Faithfulness

God's faitfulness is great. as i find myself sitting in courteny on vancouver island i am thinking about this idea and asking myself would is still say god is faithful? this is why. For the past week i have been in courtenay working during reading break making loads of cash to help pay tuition and such. this is why i can say god is faithful and one way that i can see it in my life, but if i wasn't here would i still have that view? often times i think we tend to focus on god being faithful only in the good times and saw things like it must not have been god's will or plan when something dosn't go as planned. why? isn't god the same god in the good and the bad? isn't god faithful in the bad or in the things we didn't want? maybe it is just a mindset that we have taken part of? or is it fact?

Truth in Opinions

The other day i heard a quote it goes like this, "The more opinion that we have the further away from thruth it gets." It has been a busy month full of gift searching and snowboarding with a good deal of relaxation. I think it think christmas gives us a good excuss to relax when we wouldn't normally, and allows us to think about what christmas is really about, other than gifts and family. Anyways, Merry ho ho. and check back for new posts. (even though it probably wont be until the new year).

Guilt-free Blessings

Yesterday, I felt a little guilty this is why. It was 9:30 and time for chapel; I didn’t want to be there and just wanted to leave. I kind of through the thought back and forth in my head trying figure out whether I should leave or stay. I knew there was going to be communion, and that it most likely would be the last chapel service of the semester, but I still just wanted to leave, and that is exactly what I did. As a left, I slowly walked home and thought about what happened, but the more I thought about the situation the more at ease I felt about it. As I was walking, the ease that I felt wasn’t one that grew more the further I got away from the chapel, but one that grew when I realized that I didn’t have to be in a building to worship god an have communion with him. In a way I think that the communion I had yesterday morning was far greater than if I would have been in chapel. The more I think about it, it was actually quite a neat situation I was in, there was almost two sides, or a flip that took place. This is what I mean. We go to chapel to fill in our attendance forms and lots of times (for me anyways) it is just something that we do. It may be fun or a time to relax from class, but what we get out of it spiritually is almost numbing because we may have heard it many times before, or are thinking more about our next class or how we are looking forward to lunch. The Flip to this for me was leaving this place only to come to a new place where I can have a life defining moment, which in my opinion was far greater than what I would have gotten from the chapel service. Some people reading this might think that I don’t agree with chapel, but I don’t at all. I think that it is very important and it will help us out in our spiritual life and walk with Christ, but maybe sometimes we need to get out of our buildings and get a fresh tasting of Christ and his life changing impact that he has for us. What are your thoughts?

  Comments

Miracle-icious

Lately I have been reading/listening to 2 kings, and one of the main repetitive things that I find, is the commonality of miracles. 2 kings is mostly about Elijah and Elisha the prophets, and in this book they are always performing miracles and wonders that are so out of the ordinary. So far there has been things like parting waters (like with Moses did), multiplying the supply of oil for a widow, fire coming from heaven and many other things like that. While I was reading about all of these miracles and wonders, I began to wonder why we don’t really hear or see miracles to this scale now a day. Throughout the Old and New Testament, we can see that God was always performing miracles among the people of the day. What was the reason why there seems to have been more miracles back then, or is there a reason? Have we begun to forget that God has all power and authority to heal, perform wonders, and do miracles? I find that it is pretty crazy though when you read lots of the Old Testament as well as the New about all the crazy things that God does. I know that in today’s culture (at least me) if God does something crazy in someone’s life lots of times they don’t share what happened, but I think that maybe it starts to demeanour what God can do, and is doing in everyday life. I wonder how life would be if everyone shared about the different miracles and wonders that happened to them weather big or small. I think it would be beneficial to all and help to keep everyone in aww of God and his wonderful power that he has.

What are your thoughts…?

creation snowed in

<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; It has been cold, and slippery, but at least it looks good. Andrea, and me were talking about how when it snows even though it becomes a pain to drive in or get around in it still looks good. That is one of the good things about it (that and you can go snowboarding). As I am writing this right now, I am looking out the window looking through the trees and out upon the Abbotsford fields. It is neat because the sun is going down and the sky is turning orange, it brings a reminder to myself just of God’s greatness, the that he does things and makes things and is apart of everything. It is different, because normally during the day I won’t even notice the anything that would have me think about god’s greatness in creation, but as the snow has been around I have found myself thinking about creation a little bit more. Maybe it is because there isn’t really much to do since we are almost stranded up on the hill or maybe because looks so good. Whatever it is though, I think it is important to notice things that will trigger your view of God and Creation. Maybe today you will take the time to notice something that God has created and thank him for it.

Leafy leaves

<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; It is a semi laboursome job, partially because all the leaves are soaked, you're soaked because everyday it has rained or hailed like crazy and to top it off it has been windy so when I go back and look at it all there are loose leaves in my nice clear area that I raked only a few hours earlier. If you are close enough to me when the wind blows you would probably begin to see my veins slowly popping out of my neck or wherever they are. Even though raking leaves can be a little tedious and repetitive, I learned something. It is weird because I think most people wouldn’t learn anything or much anyways from raking leaves.

As I was working I had the old saying or song whatever it was that said, “count your blessings … see what god has done.” At first I thought that raking leaves when I could be doing something else was not a blessing, but the more I thought about it the more I realized that it truly was a blessing. As a full time student, it is hard to find a job where it is super convenient and totally works around your life, and also where you are making money so that you can eat, live or pay off some of your loan or whatever. By the end of my first day of raking those dang leaves I felt like it was God way of saying that he was providing everything for me. In the weirdest way, I found myself counting my blessings, and I found that the more I worked at these leaves the more I enjoyed doing it because I knew that it was a blessing from God.

I think that it is so easy to pass off things in our day to day lives as being routine, or simply just common that we forget that everything we do and everything that we have is really in full a blessing from God. If we begin to “count our blessings” we may begin to see God’s provision and blessing on our lives that much more clearly…

When I mean a whole I mean everyone, every culture around the world. My thought was simple; basically it was “How do we make an impact among every culture?” The question was simple, but the answer was difficult. I was thinking about some of the ways that the speaker talked about in how to reach the Chinese culture that he is ministering to, and trying to pull similarities out of what he talked about and refer it to all cultures. What do all cultures need in order for them to really feel god? What do all cultures need in order feel the impact of God in their lives?

Everyone is different and every culture is different, but there has got to be something that every person and every culture needs. I think that it is important to work through some of these questions, because we do live in a country that is so full of different cultures and ethnicities. It has been said that the low mainland is a mission field in itself with many cultural differences represented. I think we should know some ways to impact these cultures so that when we have the chance to do this we are well prepared.

display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/5930/3897/320/v%20for%20vendetta.jpg" alt="" border="0" />

A few years ago I was involved in the Omega program at summit pacific college. This program was a missions based program that did teaching fro about 8 months followed by a 3-week missions trip to a country that was in need to a short-term missions team. During our preparations, we were forced to learn drama’s, and to be honest they were fun at first but after you have practiced the same drama for weeks straight they turned from ok fun to wanting to stomp on the CD with the music and throw in the towel. But there was one drama that I think is really practical, it was called the mask. For those who don’t know, the Mask is about a guy who is going through life putting on different masks so that he can feel accepted or to escape his real life. After every event takes place the guy takes off his mask puts it away and sits in a chair, feeling lonely, discourage and basically hating life. At the end, Christ comes to the door. Upon this the guy goes to put on his religious mask, but before he is able to put his mask on, Christ takes the guy and shows him who he actually is, and that he is accepted without the masks and is loved and made complete in Christ.
This drama still makes me think about how as Christians we all have our own set of masks; we put them on in times of trouble, pain, anger, or whatever else. Maybe it’s our pride that make us put on these masks? Whatever it is, as Christians we are made whole, we have been set free and have been redeemed through Christ just like the guy in the drama. Why is it that we still have the need to put on our masks and become someone or something we are not? Is it ok to wear our masks, or should we get ride on our masks and expose our spiritual lives, struggles, and fears for people to see? When we have our masks on, are we living a genuine faith or is it a faith moulded by how we are expected to act? What are you thoughts?

SFS

When I first named the title of my page, Searching for Something, it was going to be about geocaching and stuff like that, but it didn’t end up that way. It went a whole different root and turned into a page about god, life, and culture. Even though it isn’t about searching for something in the sense of geocaching, it does bring up the thought about people searching for something… In our everyday life, we all have friends and family and general people in our who are on a spiritual journey, in a sense they are searching for something. What are they searching for? Maybe it is a way to earn more money, or maybe they are searching for new friends, or maybe they are searching for a spiritual purpose... Whatever it is, I believe that most people are on a spiritual journey and are looking for something that will fill the whole that money or other material things can’t fill. How can we assist in helping them along their journey? We all have people in our lives that need help searching; it is our responsibility to help them find their way… Dave Mosely shared a message one day about how often times people need a guide while they search, it is the guides responsibility to show the person “searching” where to go and how to get there. It is also the guide’s responsibility to show them the way… Everyone is searching for something, with our help they can find what they are looking for.

We need to be the guide…

Maximus

<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; It is when Maximus says, “What we do in life echoes in eternity” or in other words, “what we are doing for God today will have eternal and kingdom influence.” I think as Christians this quote is true in our spiritual life with God. For lots of Christians, we tend to get into a pattern where we become neutral in our faith and stop doing or pause the things that Christ has called us to do. Maybe we have miss placed our priorities and the things that we were once passionate about, but the reality is that God has given everyone gifts that he wants us to use to impact people with. Each person has been created uniquely with an ability to share the gospel to different people that others may have a hard time with. I guess the question would be, what we are going with these unique giftings? We need to use these giftings god has given us to further the kingdom of God, and to have impact that will last for eternity.

It is the one that says how we are to not be conformed to the pattern of this world but to be transformed by the renewing of your mind. I have been thinking about this verse in the context of being transformed into the image of God (I am not talking about physical looks either). So what doesn’t that mean, or maybe how can we do that? Maybe it is to love others, or maybe it means we need to read our bible and pray everyday (like the song). I think in order to fully comprehend what this really means we need to understand what Christ image was. Sometimes I think that we have avoided this statement because is sounds so simple, but I think there is something more to it. When I think about becoming like the image of God, it is hard to get my own understanding of how to do this without the cliché answers. So we should really think about this statement and figure out what it means in a practical and spiritual context.

I have been researching a passage in Romans that talks about how we were predestined by god and chosen by him and thought about how our free will comes into play in the realm of everything. As I was reading a few different things the thoughts began to come about this predestination thing, and it actually started to make my eyeballs shake. As I was researching this I thought about how in my opinion they should go hand in hand. A pastor in Florida wrote that god is a sovereign god and he holds everything in his hand, he writes about how while he was creating us he also chose us to walk with him. He made steps for us so that we could easily follow Christ and be conformed in the image of Christ. But this is where the free will part comes into play. Even though we were created by God and God made these steps for us to follow him, we can still trip up the step and fall and it is our responsibility to get back up and continue our walk up the steps. We can see this same pattern in the course of Israelite history. God chose the Israelites and predestined them to be his holy people, but eventually they slipped and fell (on the step) and as a result found themselves worshiping a golden calf or taking what was the lords as their own. It was their own freewill in the realm of predestination that they repented and entered into the promise land. So is there any difference between the two or do they go hand in hand and work within each other to create who we are and how we view life?

This can be a touchy subject so what are your thoughts?

The Bunker

As many of you know I have been reading a book called engaging the soul of youth ministry, and one of the things the author brought up was how we as Christians tend to sit inside our bunkers and try to stay away from the evils of this world. Why do we do that? He hadn’t taken the time to know the Chinese people, their language and their complex culture. As a result no one even knows what the new missionary is saying, he is being totally irrelevant and basically is supplying goods for which there is no demand.

I like what Walt writes after this little story; he says:

Sadly, this illustration serves as an accurate description of how the church has tried to engage the emerging generations. Yes, we know the word and have a genuine desire to share the gospel with them, but we haven’t taken the time to know them and their changing culture. When it becomes obvious they aren’t responding to our efforts, we lament the fact they have turned a deaf ear to the church. But is that really the case? I don’t think so. More often than not, their ambivalence to the church is rooted in the fact they can’t hear anything we’re saying. Because we haven’t taken the time to know them and their world, they don’t hear or understand any of it. They’re not deaf – we’re dumb. I think the thing that I am trying to get at is; Is it time to try something new again, or is it time to keep doing what I love to do in a new way? Maybe it is just both, I don’t know but either way I will still be having fun and enjoying each day that god provides me.

Just a rendom thought

Sometimes you see these great people of faith who just plain know everything from theology to philosophy to the newest electronic gizmo on the market. I must admit it is pretty neat to know someone like that, maybe it’s the way they make you think or maybe it’s because you can always ask them questions that you don’t really know the answer to yourself. But what about those people who don’t’ know a lot? I was just thinking about friends in the past that didn’t necessarily know the newest crazes or the hottest theological studies, and thinking how much god is using them. Not to say that god is going to mostly use people who don’t know as much as others, but I think sometimes we get into a pattern of thinking that places a special view on someone’s life just because they know the facts.
This doesn’t make sense to me. Sure I give them the credit that they are going to be used by god in a great way, but I think the same thing about the people that we pass off as not having the facts or the knowledge to do great things. As I look at the life of Jesus and the way that he used the odd people like a fisherman, or a tax collector, or basically a person who had no real knowledge of god or the law of the Old Testament at all I think why? Maybe we sometimes forget that God will use any person that is willing, whether it is a fisherman, a tax collector, a person with a degree in theology or a wealthy businessman. It all comes down to are we willing, and I believe that if we are only willing God will use us no matter what state of life we are in.

life of love

I was thinking about the verse today in the bible, where the Pharisees are questioning Jesus about what the greatest commandment is. For those of you who may not know he says, love the lord your god with all your heart and then he said the second is like it, Love you neighbour as yourself. What does that mean though? Some people might think of it as you have to go out and marry the neighbour who lives next to you, or maybe someone will think that you need to smile at everyone who walks past you, or maybe even you simply just reject it and ask yourself why you have to be the one who has to love someone or be nice to them when you don’t even know who they are.

The truth of the matter is that when we love god with all your heart and we are listening to his voice leading us through the day there should be no room to sluff off and avoid loving our neighbour. It doesn’t really make sense to me that we can do all this stuff and think about how god can impact our lives when he already has. I think that if we are always asking god to be impacted then we might be just falling into the patern of “Consuming Christian.” What if instead of wanting to be impacted all the time in our lives we reverse it and think Love my neighbour. The truth is that there are some many people in our cities that need a little love and as god loving Christians who have been impacted by God why not use that to impact, love and encourage our neighbors, the people in our work, the kids at the skatepark or at the mall, or the homeless man on the street or maybe even the rich business man whose wife just left him and needs a hug. To me this is where I understand the part of the verse where Jesus says the second is like the first. Maybe the way to be impacted by god is through impacting others? Think about it

35For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.'

37"Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?'

40"The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'
                                                                                                                                          Matthew 25:34-40

J Postal

life at the moment

So i am thinking about what to write, and i find it hard to get it out. why is that? Maybe my thoughts are so vague these days that i am not really thinking about anything that has purpose. What is my purpose in life? This is something that i have been thinking about. I have recently moved back to Abbotsford going to Bible College, class, attending chapel and doing homework, but what is the reason i am here? I know it isn't just to go to class to get a degree, but maybe it is acually something more... I think the reality is that maybe my purpose for this year is just to learn, maybe it is to really get close to god, or maybe it is both and even more. I think when you are doing the same thing day in and day out your purpose of what you are doing begins to get fuzzy. Kind of like looking into a mirror after having a hot shower, it is almost impossible to see your reflection due to the moisture that has collected on the mirror. I guess sometimes we need to get up close and examine the why and the what of our life and really put into focus what God has for us. To me this makes sense, to you maybe not maybe you understand purpose differently, but ultimatly it is this. Everyone needs a purpose, whether it is a purpose in ministry, a purpose in your career or maybe a general purpose in life. We all need one; maybe it's time to find it. Go one do it.

J Postal

Welcome

Welcome to this blogg.
